When Ships Were Made of Wood, and the Men...of Steel
Matthew Ashe was one of our great-grandfather Patrick Ashe's eight siblings. Unlike Patrick, Matthew stayed in Ireland and joined the Royal Navy at 17. His height was documented as being 5'11"; quite tall for those days.
In 1884, Matthew was pensioned off after serving two 10-year engagements of mostly "Exemplary" service. He subsequently returned to the Dingle and became a merchant together with his wife's brother John Long. Matthew died in 1910, leaving his estate to be shared between his wife Mary (Long) Ashe and her brother John.
